Together To Remember - A Remembrance Day Concert

Snowy Monaro Arts Council, with the support of Regional Arts NSW proudly presents "Together To Remember - A Remembrance Day Concert"
Sunday 11 November at 3:00pm
Cooma Ex-Services Club, Vale Street, Cooma

Organised by Snowy Monaro Arts Council, with the support of Regional Arts NSW and South East Arts, the aim of the event is to bring people ‘together to remember’ and to celebrate the strength of the human spirit through music during times of conflict.

Ninety six years ago people from this district gathered when the Men from Snowy River Recruiting March made its way from Delegate through Cooma, Nimmitabel, Cooma, Bredbo and Michelago toward Goulburn to enlist for the First World War.
One of these Men from Snowy River, Ernest Corey, who joined the March at Cooma went on to be the only soldier to receive the Military Medal with three bars. The Ernest Corey Memorial stands in Vale Street and Corey’s descendants are local residents today.

At the 11 November concert instrumentalists and vocalists will present a repertoire of music which has inspired, encouraged and brought joy to the hearts of people – from those on the front lines to those keeping the home fires burning, to those mourning loved ones. Among the many items are the Irish patriotic song “The Minstrel Boy”, the “Colonel Bogey March” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”. The haunting ‘Adagio for Strings’, the comical ‘Run Rabbit Run’ and the rousing ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’ will be performed by several local ensembles, instrumental and vocal.
Some items have been arranged by local musicians, and one special piece will be premiered at the concert – Robert Shearer’s major choir and symphonic work, ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’. Wilfred Owen has been called one of the greatest war poets to have written in the English language. He wrote ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’ as a requiem to the loss of young life during the First World War. Robert Shearer has set the poem against sections of a requiem mass.
One dollar out of each ticket sold for this concert will go towards Legacy, a charity providing services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the incapacitation or death of a spouse or parent in the defence force service. Tickets are available at The Fabric Salon.
This special concert, proudly supported by Regional Arts NSW and the Cooma Ex-Services Club will be on Sunday 11 November at 3:00pm at the Club on Vale Street, Cooma.
